News Values

I am also going to be researching news values as well other than news stories.News values are factors that help to explain how journalist and editors decide whether certain news stories and images were accepted as 'newsworthy' or coverage.

Below is a list of the news values:

IMMEDIACY:Has it happened recently? Is the story 'breaking'?
Often pushes the news story to the top of the bulletin.

FAMILIARITY:Is is culturally or Geographically close to us London/Britain/ Europe/USA?
More important factor in local news.

AMPLITUDE:Is it a big event or one which involves large numbers of ?
Often pushes the news story to the top of the bulletin.

FREQUENCY:Does this event happen often?
Depending on the nature of the story, frequency can push it down the bulletin, (If audience becomes tired of hearing about this type of event) or it can push the story up the bulletin if audience is outrages that the same thing keeps happening.

IMPACT:Can we identify with the story as having a profound effect on our own lives?Does the story contain elements that would make us feel threatened?
Like amplitude a key news value, pushes the story to the top of the bulletin.

PREDICTABILITY:Did we expect it to happen?

SURPRISE:Is is an unusual or unexpected event?

CONTINUITY:Has this story already been defined as news?Is it part of an ongoing or long running story?
Has the effect pushing the story further down.

CONFLICT:Does the story contain drama in describing disagreements, arguments, fights or battles between two or more people/organisations?

ELITE PEOPLE:Does the story concern well known people, such as celebrities?

PERSONALISATION:Is it a human interest story?
Does it move us emotionally?

NEGATIVITY:Is it bad news?
Pushes up and dominates.

SCANDAL:Is the story likely to provoke moral outrage from parts of the audience?

BALANCE:The story may be selected to balance other news, such as a human survival story to balance a number of stories concerning death.
Positive Stories.
