News Values

I am also going to be researching news values as well other than news stories.News values are factors that help to explain how journalist and editors decide whether certain news stories and images were accepted as 'newsworthy' or coverage.

Below is a list of the news values:

IMMEDIACY:Has it happened recently? Is the story 'breaking'?
Often pushes the news story to the top of the bulletin.

FAMILIARITY:Is is culturally or Geographically close to us London/Britain/ Europe/USA?
More important factor in local news.

AMPLITUDE:Is it a big event or one which involves large numbers of ?
Often pushes the news story to the top of the bulletin.

FREQUENCY:Does this event happen often?
Depending on the nature of the story, frequency can push it down the bulletin, (If audience becomes tired of hearing about this type of event) or it can push the story up the bulletin if audience is outrages that the same thing keeps happening.

IMPACT:Can we identify with the story as having a profound effect on our own lives?Does the story contain elements that would make us feel threatened?
Like amplitude a key news value, pushes the story to the top of the bulletin.

PREDICTABILITY:Did we expect it to happen?

SURPRISE:Is is an unusual or unexpected event?

CONTINUITY:Has this story already been defined as news?Is it part of an ongoing or long running story?
Has the effect pushing the story further down.

CONFLICT:Does the story contain drama in describing disagreements, arguments, fights or battles between two or more people/organisations?

ELITE PEOPLE:Does the story concern well known people, such as celebrities?

PERSONALISATION:Is it a human interest story?
Does it move us emotionally?

NEGATIVITY:Is it bad news?
Pushes up and dominates.

SCANDAL:Is the story likely to provoke moral outrage from parts of the audience?

BALANCE:The story may be selected to balance other news, such as a human survival story to balance a number of stories concerning death.
Positive Stories.

5 W's

I am going to be researching a number of news stories and to see how the news is presented through newspapers, TV and online. The best way to define new stories is to describe them of the form of the 5 W's which are used by journalist as a formula for getting the full story. These 5 W's are important as it is the information that will decide if the readers are interested in the story and will continue on reading it.Below is an example of a news story that I found that consist all 5 W's

     WHO IS IT ABOUT?

  WHAT HAPPENED?

WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?

    WHERE DID IT TAKE PLACE?

WHY DID IT HAPPEN?

Below is the link from the story.

Preliminary Task Evaluation

Below is a list of things which helped me to edit, extract and record to make my preliminary task sound real and like a live radio show.

  • The software I used to edit out pauses and mistakes is called Adobe Audition so I was able to record everyone individually throughout without the worry if they make mistakes, e.g taking out when you are breathing too close to the mike or due to hesitation as it could all be cut out,
  • The microphone that was used is called the Shure SM58. On top of the microphone was a cover which helps that it wont detect any other sounds while I record it so it would make it sound like a radio show.
  • The choice of voices that I chose for the preliminary task was picked randomly, I didn't give it much thought of the 'actors' that done the recording for me as I would leave it for my main radio show
  • I experimented different types of effects with the jingle voice through Reverb Tired Echo but this method did not work because it sounded like it is coming from a big church, so I ended up using a Chorus Effect, which I thought is the sound you hear on a real radio show.
  • For the press conference I used Preset to get a realistic echo effect (Small Dry Room).
  • Sound effect in press conference, e.g cameras clicking and murmuring to make it sound real.I layed it on a multi task screen to find the right balance. The murmuring was like in a american court room and for camera clicking I used a variety of camera sounds.

In the beginning of the preliminary task the extract sounded dry and boring, everyone sounded the same and it did not sound like a realistic radio show. I learned how technology can be used to manipulate sound to give the listener the 'feel' of radio and a sense of being in different places and make the 'actors' sound like professional presenters.

Sound Effects For My Preliminary Task

Later this week I am going to be recording my preliminary task, so I need to search for potential music and sound effects for my jingle as well as for my archive clip.By doing this it will make my radio extract sound real and from a live radio show.

Below is the list of potential sound effects for my radio extract:

  • For my jingle I want a a goal scored and crowd cheering in the backround.
  • Multiple camera clicks in the archive clip
  • murmuring in the backround

Preliminary Task Script

Here is a short script of my preliminary task. The extract is from a football radio station about a footballer who joined the huge football club Chelsea from Derby County and an archive clip of him speaking at a press conference.I also have to decide the necessary sound effects to make it sound realistic.

JINGLE:Goal FM 94.6 Goals as they go in.(Cheering as a goal scored)

PRESENTER:Welcome back to Goal FM and you're here with Sean Harris.Today as our guest we have the huge star footballer Ryan Gauld who recently made his transfer record move to Chelsea.Hi Ryan.

ROBIN:Hey Sean,thanks for having me

PRESENTER:The last few days must have been hectic and exciting at the same time with you moving to one of the biggest teams in football.

ROBIN:Yeah it has been amazing I still cant believe this is all happening it has been a dream since I was a kid to join one of the football giants.

PRESENTER:I can imagine so,lets just play a clip of you speaking at the press conference a couple days back.

(Start of archive clip)
(Cameras clicking in the background)
ROBIN:I would like to thank to all the people who helped me and supported me to be at Derby County.Without Derby helping me improve I would have never had a chance to sign for Chelsea.  I hope I will be able to continue my development under Jose Mourinho and help bring more trophies to the Bridge.

(Chairs moving in backround)
REPORTER:What prompted you to move to Chelsea?

ROBIN:Chelsea is a great club that has had success and I wanted to be part of their history.Chelsea will help me improve as a player.

AS Media Introduction

For my AS Media coursework,I will be recording and editing a 5 minute extract from a imaginary radio station.I also have to be researching existing radio stations to help me write a script for the extract. It will include a news bulletin, voxpops, presenters and adverts.

Before I start my research for my radio extract,I am going to have to script a short preliminary task which will include a Jingle,Presenter of show introducing a guest,Guest responding and an archive clip featuring a guest.
