Representation (News Presenters)

In this post I am going to compare and contrast representations by listening to news bulletins from a range of different stations, taking note of voices used, language and banter etc.

The first station I listened to was BBC radio 5 live at 9am with the show presenter was a middle aged woman, Rachel Burden, she spoke in a relax, calm and in some sense a serious voice at a normal speed. She uses formal language when interacting with other presenter and with people calling in, when introducing the guests she says  'Hello' and 'Thank You' which again shows very formal and it tells us the audience is more for older people.

The second station I listened to is Kiss FM with the show presenter was a young female, Neev Spencer, she spoke in a more informal language where talking to her audience she starts off saying 'Morning guys' which shows us that her audience are more for younger people.

Other Conventions Of Radio News Bulletins

In this post I am going to look at other conventions of radio news bulletins that come up each time and this will help me to give me ideas on what to put on my radio show to make it look more authentic.

1) Correspondent-A correspondent is an agent who contributes reports to a newspaper, or radio or television news.

2) Vox Pop-Is an opinion represented by informal comments from members of the public, especially when broadcast or published.

3) Sound Bites-Its a short audio or video clip that was taken from a speech or press conference and broadcast especially during a news report.

4) Archive Clip-It is pre recorded information about a place, institution or group of people.

5) Jingle- It's a short slogan, verse, or tune designed to be easily remembered

Comparing Local News Bulletins

Neither of the stations I chose had the same stories just as I suspected aside from one, as the individual local radio station were giving news to it's respective local areas, it's number one news value FAMILIARITY.The only news story that was quite similar was the one about the climate change which would have an impact on the UK so was bound to appear on all stations. The sports news was very different as the BBC Leeds only gave the sport news on Leeds football and rugby team and the same for Bolton news.

    Comparing News Bulletins

After listening to three different National radio station and analysing each of the bulletins, I found that they do contain some of the same news stories. The story about the British prime minister visiting France to talk about how to stop the militants from spreading their terror around the world has come up on each of the radio stations which shows the news value 'Amplitude' is so big that no matter the type of radio station it is, the story still comes up because it affects a lot of people

Other stories that come up on radio stations are specifically news for it's station audience.
In Kerrang it started with the Rock music news which is different to the other radio stations which I analysed, since it is giving news that is for their targeted audience
